"I think aspects of human culture that some people regard as unimportant actually operate within a really deep system of ancient symbolism and human archetypes. Hard rock Cafes, strip clubs, gyms, celebrities, etc, are all great examples of this, of roadside temples. My albums are like downloads from that body of information." -James Ferraro in an interview for the Wire.

Gaiteiros de Lisboa

The most amazing band to come out of the Portuguese traditional/folk scene during the last 20 years, in my opinion. Dont't miss them live, if they play a gig near you.

Gaiteiros de Lisboa is a folk-traditional-world band of multi-talented musicians who got together around a sonorous project that stands on the constant search for new sounds. This has leaded the group to the creation of original instruments. Basing its work upon the combination of the sound of different wind instruments and vocal polyphonies, the band plays both songs and tunes coming out of Portuguese tradition or from other cultures, as well as their own compositions. Their experimental attitude sets up a bridge between Tradition and Modernity, by blending traditional styles with contemporary sensibilities. [from the band's official website]

Janita Salomé

A Cantar ao Sol (1983)

In this little known masterpiece of Euro-Berber folk music (a label I have just made up) Janita Salomé fuses South-Portuguese polyphonic chanting with North-African rhythms with astonishing results. Other records of interest from this artist include "Lavrar em Teu Peito" (1985), "Olho de Fogo" (1987), and his latest achievement, "Vinho dos Amantes" (2007). You don't want to miss this one, in spite of the lousy bit rate (128).

Yat-Kha

Albert Kuvezin, from Huun-Huur-Tu, founded Yat-Kha in the mid-nineties intending to introduce new influences to his homeland traditional style. Albeit firstly focused on the insertion of electronic elements (by avant-garde musician, and also founding member, Ivan Sokolovsky - who left the band shortly after), Yenisei-Punk is a great example of rock music moderately conciliated with tuvan folk, and of the path which would the group follow afterwards.
