Furekaaben

Furekaaben was a Danish hippie-commune that among other things also was into making music. They released two LP’s that were pressed in small numbers, and are very sought after today by collectors. The LP had black and white artwork which was hand painted by members of the group / community before being sold, making each LP unique.

Musically speaking, this is hippie-improvisation, free-flowing freak-folk with a very drugged out feeling to the whole thing. Dreamy, trippy textures with tabla, zither, Indian flutes, acoustic guitar, cello, violins, male / female vocals - you get the idea

Bill Fay

An aspect of this album that does not sound like either Bob Dylan or David Blue is the odd orchestration, which toes an uneasy line between the sort of stately, Baroque classicism heard in some of Nick Drake's arrangements and cheesy easy listening. It's usually delivered with a somber, earnest air, with the intent of someone who believes he has something very important to impart, but really isn't too interesting.

Fred Lonberg-Holm

Ubiquitous Chicago cellist, whose name is familiar to many fans of modern music as he has worked with such artists as: BOXHEAD ENSEMBLE, FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, FREAKWATER, SUPERCHUNK, THE ALUMINUM GROUP, THE STYRENES and many others in addition to releasing several albums of improvised music in a variety of ensembles. Here he teams up with 12 different guitarists for improvised duets of cello & guitar. A project not too dissimilar in concept from DEREK BAILEY's "Playbacks" CD and one with similarly surprising results.

collaborators:
Jim O'Rourke, Ben Vida, Kevin Drumm, Todd Rittmann, Michael Krassner, Charles Kim, Jeb Bishop, John Corbett, Helen Mirra, Michael Zerang, Adam Sonderberg, Jim Baker

The Gaylads

The Gaylads were one of the top rocksteady vocal groups active in Jamaica between 1963 and 1973. The group, formed in Kingston, originally consisted of singers Harris "B.B." Seaton, Winston Delano Stewart and Maurice Roberts; Seaton and Stewart had previously been successful as the duo Winston & Bibby. There would be several line-up changes throughout The Gaylads' ten year history, with Maurice Roberts remaining the only constant member.

Elizabeth Cotten

Self-taught and having no knowledge of conventional guitar tunings (e.g. standard 'EADGBE' tuning or any established open tunings), Cotten developed her own original style. Her approach to left-handed guitar playing involved keeping the guitar in standard tuning but holding it upside down. This position required her to play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature, alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking".
